In Memory of Raves

In lieu of our ability to have a Reynolds memory event due to the summer break and the COVID-19 pandemic, this post has been created in memoriam of Dave Ravenhill for our website. It will remain on our website until the end of August at which point it will be moved to the CSE page.

Dave Ravenhill

A graduate of the University of Victoria Dave Ravenhill started his teaching career in 1988 before coming to Reynolds Secondary in 1990. Dave personified the Reynolds three R’s: Respect, Relationships, and Responsibility. Over his 30 years at Reynolds Dave was a part of a group of educators who played a key role in moving the school’s culture forward. While the name Dave Ravenhill is synonymous with Island Soccer, he had a passion for all sport.  This was best exemplified through his role as Athletic Director where he worked tirelessly to bring Reynolds Athletics out of the shadows and into the spotlight. His passion for sport was also evident when he created the Reynolds Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, the Scarf Legacy Program in 2010 and most recently, the Island/Provincial banner wall of champions in our gymnasium. Throughout his career Dave coached many school teams and achieved great success winning several city and island championships in soccer. He was a superb coach who instilled sportsmanship in his players and was highly respected in the sports community.

Dave’s love for educating young people and for sport and recreation was inspirational. He strived to pass this love on to his students. From 1990-2020 he coordinated the Career Program in Recreation, Sport, and Health Services (CP Rec) which introduced students to careers in sport, recreation and health. In 2003, his passion for soccer, coupled with innovation and vision, resulted in the creation of the Reynolds Centre for Soccer Excellence (CSE). As the coordinator of this program, he provided unparalleled opportunities for students to develop their personal growth through sport.

Dave was a kid at heart and enjoyed taking students on trips, enabling them to have new and exciting experiences whether it was surprising them with tickets to a sporting event, an amusement park or surfing in Tofino. Moreover, he was generous, kind, encouraging and grounded by deep integrity.

Dave gave himself selflessly and wholeheartedly to students and athletes. He had a tremendous impact on the overall school community and was loved by staff and students alike. Reynolds is grateful and honoured to have had such an instrumental teacher and leader in our school for three decades and we are better for it. He will always be a Roadrunner.

As many of you know, Dave was a massive Liverpool FC supporter and truly believed in the team’s song “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.  He too, will never walk alone.

Reynolds sends its heartfelt condolences to the Ravenhill family, his wife Karen, and sons Andrew and Adam.

The family has also set up a bursary/scholarship that anyone can contribute to. Please see the link below. The David Ravenhill Memorial Bursary is dedicated to the memory of a man who changed the lives of so many.

Founded by the Ravenhill family, this Bursary has been established to remember David and to give back to the community and the youth, that he loved so much.
